A tactical move or series of moves based on the opponent’s weakened King, hanging or undefended pieces or inadequately guarded pieces. Usually involving a sacrifice, it is a calculable series of moves leading to material or positional gains. It is important to note that a combination cannot exist if at least one of the above factors is not present. Though several players have attempted to create a clear definition throughout the years, the following definition by Silman and Seirawan is the most accurate: A combination is a sacrifice, combined with a forced sequence of moves, that exploits specific peculiarities of the position in the hope of attaining a certain goal.
A sequence of moves involving a SACRIFICE played in order to gain a specific advantage, usually to win MATERIAL or to force CHECKMATE, sometimes to force a draw from an inferior position.
Series of moves designed to improve your overall position, usually involving surprise and maybe even a piece "sacrifice".
a coordinated sequence of chess moves
a sequence of numbers or letters that opens a combination lock; "he forgot the combination to the safe"
a collection of structured moves that are performed in continuity Hip-Hop music is broken down into beats
a forcing sequence, often involving a temporary sacrifice, which results in an advantage - checkmate, win of material or a winning positional bind
a set of unique elements with no consideration towards the sequence
A term describing a tactical exploitation of a position (forced set of moves) that leads to an advantage (usually a better position) for the initiator of the moves. Category: Glossary 3 visitor(s) thought this was helpful. Do you
A series of moves put together by a player in which the opponent's moves are forced (or almost forced), usually involving a sacrifice. A combination ends with an advantage for the player who initiated it. (See also sacrifice.)
A sacrifice and forced sequence of moves to gain a certain advantage.
any long series of moves that the average player cannot understand.
A series of punches thrown in quick succession
One complete sequence by a player or one co-op sequence by players of the same team. Elements may include throw, take-in, move, and catch.
A series of moves which will force an immediate win or an overwhelming advantage in material or position. Most combinations sometimes start with a sacrifice of material.
A clever sequence of moves, often involving a sacrifice, to gain the advantage. The moves of the other player are usually ''forced'', i.e. a combination does not give the opponent too many possible lines of continuation.
COMB: Combination is a relatively brief suite of moves, more or less forced, realized in view to obtain a concrete advantage (material advantage, better positional play, free lines, active pieces, initiative etc...). Thus in a combination one player has the initiative of this suite of moves and the opponent cannot always refuse this sequence and, this way, has a more passive role (Chess Terminology).
Punches thrown in sequence
a forcing sequence involving threats (of capture, check and/or mate), probably involving a sacrifice. There are examples in the Tactics and Attacking sections of the Canon.
In chess, a combination is a relatively long sequence of moves, often initiated by a sacrifice, which leaves the opponent few options and results in tangible gain. At most points in a chess game, each player has several reasonable options from which to choose, which makes it difficult to plan ahead except in strategic terms. Combinations, in contrast to the norm, are sufficiently forcing that one can calculate exactly how advantage will be achieved against any defense.
