Definitions for "Autologous bone marrow transplant"
A bone marrow transplant where the new, healthy bone marrow comes from the patient themselves. Healthy bone marrow is removed and then high dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy is given. Later, the bone marrow is given back to the patient, so that it can start to regrow.
A process in which a patient's healthy bone marrow is withdrawn and preserved. It is later injected back into the patient to replace bone marrow damaged by high doses of radiation therapy.
(Auto BMT): Bone Marrow is taken from the patient's own body prior to high dose chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment. After treatment, the marrow, which may or may not have been treated with chemotherapy, is reinfused into the patient to restore the immune system. Also see Bone Marrow Transplantation.
