Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. A communications access method, using SNA protocols, for sending/receiving data.
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. The mainframe communications foundation that allows multiple systems, users and printers on the mainframe to interconnect and interoperate. VTAM also has the capability to communicate with other protocol networks, such as the TCP/IP network.
The main Systems Network Architecture (SNA) subsystem resident in an IBM mainframe that manages session establishment and data flow between terminals and application programs, or between application programs. See SNA.
Virutal Terminal Access Method, an SNA protocol.
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. The SNA software that runs on IBM mainframes and implements the functions of network control, network management interface, and SNA support for host based application programs.
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. n. IBM software that controls communication and the flow of data in an SNA network by providing the SNA application programming interfaces and SNA networking functions. An SNA network includes subarea networking, Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking (APPN), and High-Performance Routing (HPR). Beginning with Release 5 of the OS/390 operating system, the VTAM for MVS/ESA function was included in Communications Server for OS/390; this function is called Communications Server for OS/390 - SNA Services.
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. An IBM software routine: the virtual access method for 3270 systems.
Virtual Telecommunication Access Method. A licensed program that controls communication and data flow in an SNA network. It provides single-domain, multiple-domain, and interconnected network capability, and also supports application programs and subsystems.
See Virtual Telecommunication Access Method.
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. An IBM standard for software that runs on the host mainframe computer and works with the Network Control Program to establish communications between the host and the cluster controllers. Among other things, VTAM sets the pacing and logical unit (LU) characteristics.
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. An IBM-licensed program that controls communication and the flow of data in an SNA network. It provides single-domain, multiple-domain, and interconnected network capability.

Virtual Terminal Access Method
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. Synonymous with ACF/VTAM.
(Virtual Telecommunications Access Method) An IBM program that resides on the host, and .that controls communications and the flow of data in a SNA network.
Abbreviation of Virtual Telecommunications Access Method, an IBM API that controls communications in Systems Network Architecture (SNA) networks. VTAM supports several network protocols, including SDLC and Token Ring. VTAM is now known as the SNA Services feature of Communications Server for OS/390.
virtual telecommunications access method. Set of programs that control communication between LUs. VTAM controls data transmission between channel-attached devices and performs routing functions.
Virtual telecommunications access method. An IBM protocol.
Virtual Telecommunications Access Method: a set of program that control communication between nodes and applications programs running on a host system. Return to Contents
VTAM is an acronym for Virtual Telecommunications Access Method. VTAM is IBM's software package that provides communications via telecommunication devices and their users for mainframe environments. It is the implementation of Systems Network Architecture (SNA) for mainframes.
