GRADE POINT AVERAGE. A calculated index number that signifies the student's academic performance during a quarter (term) or entire collegiate experience (cumulative). It is expressed on a decimal scale from 0.00 to 4.00. It is calculated via the following formula: GPA = Total Grade Points/Total Graded Credits Earned. Grade points are the product of course credit times grade earned in each UW residence course. Non-graded and deductible credits may/may not be excluded. Any decimal grades reported in the 0.10 to 0.69 range are converted to 0.00. "S" and "CR"grades do not enter into GPA calculation but do count as credits earned toward graduation. "NS" and "NC" grades are both excluded from GPA calculations and do not count as credits toward graduation. Extension course and credit-by-examination grades are also excluded from GPA.
Grade Point Average. A measure of a student's academic achievement at the College, calculated by dividing the total number of grade points received by the total number of credits attempted. Your term GPA and the cumulative average are computed at the end of each term. For purposes of computing the Grade Point Average (GPA), the following weights are used: A=4.0; A-=3.7; B+=3.3; B=3.0; B-=2.7; C+=2.3; C=2.0; C-=1.7; D+=1.3; D=1.0; D-=0.7; and F=0.0. Included in the GPA calculation are the grades earned for Convocation credit, calculated as 0.25 for CA and 0.0 for CF grades. S, SC, I, and U grades are not used in calculating GPA. (Note: Prior to Fall Term 2003, the following weights were used to calculate GPA: A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1; and F=0. These weights will remain in effect for grades earned prior to Fall Term 2003.) W, WP, WF, I, and grades in non-credit courses are not used in computing the GPA.

Grade Point Average. The grade point average is a way of mathematically computing academic performance. It is determined by assigning a value to each letter grade, multiplying by the number of credit hours in the course, and dividing by the total number of hours attempted. The GPA is the standard measure for retention and graduation requirements. UALR is on a four-point system, which means that an A grade is assigned a value of four points (sometimes called quality points), a B three points, a C two points, a D one point, and an F zero points. Here's an example of a grade point average for one semester: Course Credit Hours Grade (Value) Grade Points RHET 1311 B (3) = SPCH 1300 A (4) = 12 LESC 1108 F (0) = DRTH 1260 C (2) = BIOL 1402 D (1) = HIST 1311 C (2) = Total: 16 35 Divide the total hours (16) into the total grade points (35) to find the GPA of 2.18 (slightly above a C average). The UALR cumulative GPA is based on all college-level work taken at UALR. Your semester grade report will show both the semester and the cumulative GPA. (Some developmental course grades are excluded from the GPA. Please see "Developmental courses" in this glossary.)

All the assignment and test grades are averaged together for a grade in a class. All class grades are averaged together for an overall GPA. This average is very important to get into good colleges and universities.
Grade Point Average. The grade average a student earns for each semester. It is calculated by multiplying the number of credits given for a course times the value of the grade received for the course (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0), adding the value calculated for each class and dividing by the total number of credits. Thus, if a student has an "A" in a 4 credit course; a "B" in a 3 credit course; a "C" in a 2 credit course, and a "D" in a 2 credit course the GPA calculation would be as follows: A = 4 times 4 credits = 16 grade points B = 3 times 3 credits = 9 grade points C = 2 times 2 credits = 4 grade points D = 1 times 2 credits = 2 grade points Total = 31 grade points divided by 11 total credits = 2.82 GPA.
