A rapid dance in six-eight time in which a large number join hands and dance in various figures, sometimes moving from room to room. It originated in Provence.
(Fr.) : A dance from the Provençal region of France, where each participant grasps a handkerchief held by the person ahead. The famous farandole from Bizet's L'Arlésienne is in 2/4, though most are in 6/8.
The farandole is an open-chain community dance popular in the County of Nice, France. Believed to derive from the medieval branle, it bears similarities to the gavotte, jig, and tarantella. The carmagnole of the French Revolution is a derivative.
