The Chambers dictionary definition of 'historiography' is 'the art or employment of writing history'. The word "art" implies creativity and suggests that although we may strive for objectivity, history is always subject to interpretation. When you are asked to examine historiographical debates you are expected to assess the relative merits of the different interpretations and perspectives which historians place upon their subject matter and period.
