Dematerialization is the reduction of inputs (inflows of materials) in the functioning of the economy, or the transformation of that functioning, into a process less dependent on materials extracted from Nature. "Material inputs" is taken to mean water, air, biotic resources (wood, plants, farm products) and abiotic resources (petroleum, sand, earth, mineral ores, etc.).
A methodical approach for reducing the amount of raw materials used in any given process, such as a manufacturing process or the packing and shipment of goods.
