A weapon which throws or propels a missile to a distance; any firearm or instrument for throwing projectiles, consisting of a tube or barrel closed at one end, in which the projectile is placed, with an explosive charge (such as guncotton or gunpowder) behind, which is ignited by various means. Pistols, rifles, carbines, muskets, and fowling pieces are smaller guns, for hand use, and are called small arms. Larger guns are called cannon, ordnance, fieldpieces, carronades, howitzers, etc. See these terms in the Vocabulary.
A piece of heavy ordnance; in a restricted sense, a cannon.
A cannon designed to throw a projectile a long distance with a flat trajectory.
A cannon which has a length of 12 calibers and upwards and was constructed to fire solid shot horizontally, or at very low angles, over the greatest possible distance. Described by weight of shot; 4 pounder, 6 pounder, 9 pounder, 12 pounder, 18 pounder, 24 pounder, 32 pounder, etc.
(n.) 1. A weapon which propels a projectile out through a tube, known as the barrel. by means of the expansion of gas created by the combustion of a propellant, or through compressed air or carbon dioxide. 2. In military usage, an artillery piece which can fire shells over long distances with flat trajectories, i.e., a cannon. C.f., mortar, howitzer.
a weapon that discharges a missile at high velocity (especially from a metal tube or barrel)
A relatively long-barreled cannon designed to fire projectiles with a nearly flat trajectory. For a discussion of the distinguishing characteristics of field guns, siege guns, smoothbores and rifles, see the Weapons page. For more examples, see the Encyclopedia.
Technically the gun is the barrel and breech only, and the term does not include the carriage. However, normally the word is applied to the whole equipment. In comparison with a howitzer, a gun is a long-barrelled equipment firing a relatively light shell a greater distance at a higher muzzle velocity (MV) with a lower trajectory.
Visual acquisition of gunfire, AAA site, or AAA fire.
To fire a gun in a dream is an omen of injustice to you or your family or friends. To hear a gun signifies unrest.
cannon. ( A pistol is a pistol, a musket is a musket, but neither is called a gun.)
The blank firing pistol used by the starter to start the races.
The British restrict the term in portable arms to shotguns. Here it is properly used for rifles, shotguns, handguns and airguns, as well as cannon.
A gun is a common name given to a device that fires high-velocity projectiles. The projectile, its caliber, or diameter, usually designated in fractions of an inch or in millimeters, is fired through a hollow tube known as the gun's barrel. Differing from the musket, the modern gun is rifled, excluding smoothbores on tanks, AFVs and some artillery, with a series of grooves spiraling along the barrel, and indeed the first rifles were known as 'rifled guns'.
The Chinese word Gun refers to a long Chinese staff weapon used in Chinese martial arts. It is known as one of the four major weapons, along with the Qiang (spear), Dao (sabre), and the Jian (sword), called in this group "The Grandfather of all Weapons".
