A crash is a sudden, steep drop in share prices. The downward spiral is intensified as more and more investors, seeing the bottom falling out of the market, try to sell their holdings before these investments lose all their value.
An unexpected interuption of the proper functioning of a computer; disk drive or software. WWWebfx Home Page
1. (intransitive) Computer hard disks spin extremely quickly, and the read/write heads "float" a tiny distance off the spinning platters, supported by a cushion of compressed air. Before the technology was developed to keep the heads safely off the platters during momentary power losses, it was possible for the heads to come into contact with the platters. This resulted in irreparable damage to the heads and the platters, accompanied by a horrifically loud noise. Thus, when a hard drive failed in this manner, it was said to have "crashed." 2. (intransitive) By extension, whenever a computer stops working unexpectedly, due to whatever cause, it is said to have "crashed." 3. (transitive) To deliberately cause someone else's computer to stop working, either by infecting it with a virus, or by trying to choke it with too much network traffic to deal with properly. 4. In FidoNet technology networks, to "crash" a message is to send it right away, rather than waiting for the cheap rate for long distance phone calls.
an unexpected program halt, sometimes due to hardware failure, but most often due to a software error, from which there is no recovery.
When a computer system fails suddenly. Same as hang, "lock up," and "bomb." Usually requires rebooting the computer. Crashes almost always originate in software or firmware and very seldom cause actual damage to the hardware.
When a computer seizes up and will no longer respond to commands, it has crashed. This is usually not your fault
A crashed computer has lost its mind. It can no longer function. Crashes can be caused by hardware failure and by software.
A serious computer failure. A computer crash means that the computer itself stops working or that a program aborts unexpectedly. A crash signifies either a hardware malfunction or a very serious software bug. If your computer crashes, it is not your fault. If the program is good and your hardware is functioning properly, there is nothing you can do to make your system crash.
A sudden, usually drastic failure of a computer system.
when a computer suddenly stops responding or to Freeze.
v. To halt in an unrecoverable manner, when not expected.
A sudden failure in a computer system causing it to go offline.
An incident in which a server shuts down unexpectedly because too many demands are being made on it. Typically, Websites and Webpages crash because too many users are trying to access them at one time.
A term indicating what happens when your computer stops working suddenly or breaks down.
a sudden large decline of business or the prices of stocks (especially one that causes additional failures)
(computer science) an event that causes a computer system to become inoperative; "the crash occurred during a thunderstorm and the system has been down ever since"
undergo a sudden and severe downturn; "the economy crashed"; "will the stock market crash again?"
stop operating; "My computer crashed last night"; "The system goes down at least once a week"
a broad definition for what happens when your computer or an individual program stops working
a collapse of the prices of assets, or perhaps the failure of an important firm or bank
an ontologically unforeseen effect of this intention
a serious failure of an asm program
is an unwanted termination of program execution. At the most controlled level, an error message appears, and the program execution is abruptly ended, usually without saving data. They program may exit immediately, dropping back to the operating system. In the worst case, the computer locks up and must be reset (or turned off and on again).
A PC or Server that has to be restarted because it has been rendered inoperable. The crash could be caused by software, hardware, or a combination of software and hardware.
a breakdown in a computer program.
Something you should hope does not happen to your computer. When a computer unexpectedly ceases to operate, possibly destroying information in the process a crash has most likely occurred.
A computer failure caused by a hardware or software malfunction that causes the computer or software program to stop responding.
The act of a computer's operating system becoming inoperative.
When a computer program or operating system stops working completely or almost completely it (or the computer) is said to have "crashed". When a computer crashes it usually needs to be rebooted before it can be used again. See also lockup.
A sudden decline in the population of a plant or animal in a particular habitat. For example, a spill from an oil tanker could cause a population crash of shellfish on a rocky seashore.
When your computer stops working suddenly or the system breaks down.
This term refers to the unfortunate event of a computer "freezing"; meaning that the ability to control the machine is effectively lost. All users will experience this phenomenon at some point in time. Usually, a forced reboot will correct the problem, unless an actual hardware failure has occured, which is possible but rare. See Save, Backup, Boot.
Complete computer system failure. Necessitates a reboot of the system. (See boot.)
When a computer or other piece of technology becomes unresponsive to a user's commands and has to be restarted.
Situation where your computer stops functioning (could be temporary problem, fixed by a reboot, or permanent). Usually followed by a crashing sound when you throw something out of frustration.
A sudden, usually drastic failure. Can be said of the operating system or a particular program when there is a software failure. Also, a disk drive can crash because of hardware failure.
The sudden, unexpected cessation of operation of a program or of the computer.
Although often used to describe ANY type of computer error, the term Crash should only be used to define a hardware malfunction which occurs during startup. Older Macs that "crashed" during startup informed the user by playing a four- or eight-note musical melody, rather than the normal startup chime. Modern Macs play the sound of a high-speed automobile crash.
When a program or operating system fails to respond to commands or causes other programs to malfunction.
destroy, fail, wreck. [Pc talk
sudden failure of software or hardware, often resulting in no response to mouse or keyboard actions.
An interactive utility for examining the operating system core and for determining if system parameters are being exceeded.
Refers to when your computer or Internet suddenly stops working.
A problem (often caused by a bug) that causes a program, or the entire operating system, to unexpectedly stop working.
When a program terminates unexpectedly, due to an internal fault, a user error or some other unforeseen event, the program has "crashed." All types of software, from operating systems to applications to Web server software, are prone to the occasional crash. Stability is a measure of how crash resistant a piece of software is. The less likely that a piece of software will crash, the more "stable" that piece of software is.
a more or less catastrophic system failure that normally requires an unscheduled dead-start
What happens when something goes wrong and your program (or worse, its operating environment) ceases to function.
A hardware or software problem that causes information to be lost or the computer to malfunction. Sometimes a crash can cause permanent damage to a computer.
This is the complete failure of software or hardware operation. The only available option is to restart from an initial condition.
The sudden failure of software, the computers operating system or hard drive. You may lose a lot of your work if your system crashes.
The sudden and complete failure of a computer system or component.
When the computer or a network suddenly stops working.
When the program you have open stops responding to commands or causes malfunctions in other programs.
Means to fail suddenly. 'Has the system just crashed?', 'Something crashed the OS (Operating System)?' This may mean that the system failed for whatever reason (loss of server connection, loss of network connection). The computer may crash which is also called the Blue Screen of Death (refer to section B in the Glossary).
A critical failure of the UNIX system hardware or software requiring a complete system rebuild (for example, disk head crash).
A system failure that causes the processors' registers to be reset to some standard values.
What happens when you or a program does something that Windows does not like, and the monitor goes blank and/or the computer turns off.
a catastrophic circumstance in which software, hardware, or media that store data cease to function, making information inaccessible.
A malfunction that brings work to a halt. A system crash is usually caused by a software malfunction, and ordinarily you can restart the system by rebooting the machine.
The failure of a hardware component, software application, or the computer itself. A crash can affect the program you are using, the operating system, or the entire computer, and often results in the need to restart the computer.
A computer slang term for a, usually serious, programming error.
Failure of a system or program. Usually, you realize that your system has crashed when you can't move the mouse pointer or type anything. The term crash is also used to refer to a disk crash (or head crash). A disk crash occurs when the read/write head in the disk drive falls on the disk. This would be like dropping a phonograph needle on a record. A disk crash can destroy any data stored where the read/write head falls on the disk.
A problem that causes a program, or the entire operating system, to unexpectedly cease responding.
An unexpected shutdown either of a program or the whole system.; sometimes traumatic, always frustrating ; often fixable by turning off the computer and turning it back on; results in losing any unsaved work. Can also be used in instances of a hard disk physically being damaged.
Also known as freeze. When a computer application or PC suddenly stops functioning due to a software conflict or other problem.
The term used to indicate that a computer system has stopped working.
a failure by an application or the System, usually due to a conflict
The sudden failure of a program or hard drive. A program crash usually means the loss of all your unsaved data and can either require you to restart the program or the entire computer. A hard drive crash can leave your hard drive totally unusable, resulting in the loss of everything on it.
Failure of a computer's ability to process.
When a computer or program ceases to work it is said to crash. When a computer crashes, it will usually need to be restarted before it can be used again.
a system malfunction in which the computer stops working and has to be restarted.
A crash in computing is a condition where a program (either an application or part of the operating system) stops performing its expected function and also stops responding to other parts of the system. Often the offending program may simply appear to freeze. If this program is a critical part of the operating system kernel the entire computer may crash (a system crash).
CRASH was a magazine dedicated to the ZX Spectrum home computer. It was published from 1984 to 1991 by Newsfield Publications Ltd until their liquidation, and then until 1992 by Europress.
