Identify the skills and knowledge required to perform a job; have been developed with industry so they relate directly to the workplace; provide a benchmark against which it is possible to measure performance.
Competency standards also referred to as national industry / enterprise competency standards, are national standards that set out the work skills and knowledge required for effective performance in the workplace. The standards are determined by industry.
Industry Competency Standards are nationally agreed, industry developed statements of the competencies required for effective performance in a particular industry. Someone who is competent has the required knowledge and skills and can apply them effectively at work. Each competency standard (called a unit) is made up of elements, performance criteria, a range of variables and an evidence guide. The National Training Framework Committee (ANTA) endorses all standards.
They are an industry-determined specification of performance which sets out the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to operate effectively in employment. Competency standards are made up of units of competency, which are themselves made up of elements of competency, together with performance criteria, a range of variables, and an evidence guide. Competency standards are an endorsed component of a training package.
