digital audio output: a digital audio connection used to connect a digital source component (e.g., DVD player, CD player, etc.) to a receiver or pre-amplifier. The data passed is the "raw" digital audio signal. This means of interconnect minimizes the interference and degradation. Also see Toslink optical digital audio output. back to the previous page
A cable commonly used to transmit information. Coaxial cable consists of a solid center conductor which is surrounded by insulation which in turn is surrounded by an outer conductor, which prevents the cable from emitting or absorbing electrical noise. All of this is then covered with an outer sheathing. Coaxial cables have a wide bandwidth and are capable of concurrently carrying several data, voice, and video conversations over great distances.
A type of cable that contains two wires, usually to carry two signals or channels. RCA Output cables - the type most commonly associated with car audio - are coaxial. See the RCA output definition for more details.
A type of cable which has a single central conductor surrounded by special packed insulation. Commonly used for Video and data signalling.
Electrical cable used to carry signals. They can be used as digital connections between hi-fi and home cinema audio equipment, and for connecting a roof-mounted antenna to a television or video recorder. Also see optical.
A cable that has a inner copper wire surrounded by three layers. A plastic layer about 2-3mm thick Grounded Wire mesh Final plastic layer I ts main use is for TV's due to its resistance to electromagnetic interference. Return
A cable comprised of a single copper cable. Most commonly used in cable television, DBS satellite cabling, broadband networks, and some base band networks.
Refers to the condition when more than one device shares the same axis. Typically found in the speaker industry where the horn driver is mounted on the same axis as the woofer driver. The drivers are usually time aligned as well. A speaker like this reproduces sound the most natural way possible, with all of the frequencies coming form the same point in space.
A type of cable used to connect the controller directly to an IBM host. Coaxial cable consists of an outer layer of insulation, an outer conductor, another insulating layer, and a central conductor. See also twinaxial.
There are two types of cables and sockets used to connect digital audio equipment. Optical cables use thin fibre optic leads. Coaxial (or electrical) cables are thicker and the sockets look the same as conventional RCA connectors. Arguably, coaxial digital cables offer better performance but optical ones can be easier to use and hide.
A type of cabling with a copper core, insulation and a protective rubber coating, and screw-on connectors.
a copper tube with a copper wire running through its centre
A cable with one inner conductor, and an outer shield insulated from one another by a dielectric foam, used mostly in CATV, and 10Base2 Ethernet.
One of the two main types of digital audio connection, a coaxial cable passes "raw" digital data from an output source, such as a DVD player, to a home cinema receiver. Interference and degradation of the audio signal is kept to the minimum.
Refers to a type of connector that carries IEC60958 (S/P DIF) format digital audio signals.
Refers to devices having the same center. In a coaxial speaker, the tweeter is mounted in the center of the woofer. A coaxial cable consists of a central wire surrounded by insulation and an outer wire forming a cylindrical shield against interference.
A coaxial cable is used to transfer infrared or radio frequencies from one system or component to another. This type of cable consists of a center conductor (hot) surrounded by a ground shield.
For a cable to be considered coaxial it must contain a center core conductor, and a second conductor wrapped around it. The second conductor can be made from different types of braided conductors (typically au - gold, cu - copper, and al - aluminum) or a metal foil. This outer wire is typically the ground.
1) A speaker typically with one driver in the middle of, and on the same axis as, another driver. 2) An audio or video cable with a single center pin that acts as the hot lead and an outer shield that acts as a ground.
A shielded copper wire cable that has a RCA plug or F connector. Can be used for digital as well as analog signal movement.
Sometimes abbreviated "coax." It means there are two electrical signals on one cable - one on the inside, one on the outside. This is one format through which digital audio is transmitted.
A type of cable that uses two conductors: a central, solid wire core, surrounded by insulation, which is then surrounded by a braided wire conductor sheath. This cable is particularly well suited for networking because it can accommodate high bandwidth and is relatively resistant to interference.
This is the type of wire that transfers the cable modem and cable television signals.
1) An audio or video cable with a single centre pin that acts as the hot lead and an outer shield that acts as a ground. 2) A speaker typically with one driver in the middle of, and on the same axis as, another driver
A speaker composed of larger cone for low range frequencies and a smaller cone or tweeter for higher frequencies aligned on the same axis. A crossover network is necessary to route the proper signals to each driver. These may be passive (usually included). If the speakers are bi-amplified, an active crossover will be used to route the proper range of frequencies to the respective amplifier channels.
(also see Concentric): Sharing the same axis. When referring to cartridges, one part is contained inside the other part, as opposed to side-by-side.
A type of cable construction in which an inner conducting wire is surrounded by a shielding cylindrical outer conductor; commonly used in video and digital audio connections. Connectors maintaining this construction may also be referred to as coaxial. Also refers to a speaker configuration in which two drivers are mounted one behind the other so that their centers are in line.
A type of network cable that is very familiar to a cable for television, the cable has a black cover with an insulated center copper strand.
(Coax) A cable with a single inner conductor with foam insulation and braided shield. picture
A speaker in which two drivers share the same axis; typically, a tweeter is suspended in front of the woofer.
A type of wire that consists of a center wire surrounded by insulation and then a grounded shield of braided wire. The shield minimizes electrical and radio frequency interference.
A type of wiring where the signal wire is in the center of a shielded cable. Compare to twisted pair.
10 Base5 network cable with 10Mbps transfer rate. Coaxial cables use BNC connectors.
(Wireless) A strong, high-capacity cable designed to carry high-frequency or broadband signal.
In geometry, coaxial means that two or more forms which share a common axis; it is the three-dimensional linear analog of "concentric".
