All cars must have a mechanical system to stop and hold the car. the brake shoe is the mechanical device activated by air pressure or by hand, which pushes against the wheel and creates friction, producing a stopping action.
Correctly, the shoe is the metal component used to push the friction lining against the drum in a drum brake system, but the term is now used to refer to the whole shoe and pad assembly.
A brake shoe consists of a steel shoe with the friction material or lining bonded to it. (See Figure 3.) Figure 3. Brake Shoe
