Technical process of accessing and viewing a video file directly by a user from a network computer without the need to download the entire file prior to viewing.
Sending video or audio over a network as needed, such as Real Audio/Video or Microsoft NetShow, instead of forcing the user to download the entire file before viewing it. Typically a few seconds of data is sent ahead and buffered in case of network transmission delays. (Although some data is buffered to the hard drive, it is written to temporary storage and is gone once viewing is complete.)
Streaming video delivers compressed multimedia content over the Internet in a stream of packets. Viewers view the file as it downloads, instead of downloading the entire file first. Streaming video first initializes the transfer, and then buffers it. Bandwidth determines both picture quality and whether or not the viewed video catches up with the downloading content, which causes the video to stop. RealPlayer is one of the most popular free streaming video players available. Video streaming is commonly used for viewing live feeds from security cameras, with RTSP/RTP being the main streaming technology currently in use.
Refers to the technical process whereby a video file can be accessed directly by a user from the server-computer and be seen immediately. This avoids the need for the user to download the video file onto his/her own computer. See also Client-server relation; Download
Before the development of "streaming" audio and video, a web user had to wait for an entire file to download before he/she could view a video or listen to an audio presentation. The download could take hours
A method for transferring video such that it can be processed as a firm and continuous stream. With streaming, the client can start presenting the data before the whole file has been transmitted.
Video streaming provides your visitors with video images such as movie trailers, speeches, etc.
A way to transfer video data that enables a computer to process the data as a steady stream. This enables a user to start viewing a file's data before receiving the entire file. (Most users' Internet access is not fast enough for downloading large video files quickly.)
Method of transmitting visual information over the internet where information is displayed as it is being transmitted rather than waiting until a large file is downloaded.
Video with synchronized sound sent in compressed form over the Internet. A special program called a “player†is needed to decompress and view streamed data.
Streaming involves sending movies from a server to a client over a network such as the Internet. The server breaks the movie into packets that can be sent over the network. At the receiving end, the packets are reassembled by the client and the movie is played as it comes in. A series of related packets is called a stream. Streaming is accomplished by way of web browser plug-ins, which decompress and play the file in real time; a fast computer and fast connection are necessary.
