Special Protocol Assessments
Single Project Assurance. a type of Assurance of Compliance with the Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR) to assure compliance with the Federal Regulations for protecting human research participants (45 CFR 46) which is limited in use and duration to an individual research activity. A SPA is singed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) Chairperson, Institutional Official, and Principal Investigator of the activity for which the SPA applies. An activity usually consists of a single protocol but occasionally may consist of more. A SPA institution usually relies on its own IRB but may utilize the IRB of a neighboring co-participating institution (depending on certain membership considerations) which either has an MPA form OPRR or possesses an OPRR-approved SPA which is considered applicable. Such reliance required signatures by the IRB Chairperson and the Officials of both institutions.
Special Protection Areas. Sites of European importance for wild birds designated under the Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c) Regulations, 1992 in the UK. All the London areas are included within Sites of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation.

Special Protection Areas. These are classified by the Scottish Executive under the EU Conservation and Wild Birds Directive 79/409/EEC. Proposed SPAs are identified by Scottish Natural Heritage for the purpose of protecting habitats of rare, threatened or migratory bird species.

Special Protection Areas are protected areas of land designated by the European Union under the Birds Directive.

Special Protection Area. SPA requires three things: a performance based water quality plan, water quality monitoring before, during and after development, and the use of storm water management BMP's (Best Management Practices).
Special Protocol Assessment. A procedure by which the FDA provides official evaluation and written guidance on the design and size of proposed protocols that are intended to form the basis for a new drug.
