Joseph Campbell defines ritual as "the public enactment of myth." Like myth, it is an expression of the collective unconsciousness, but it is deliberately performed by designated persons called shamans on designated occasions to achieve certain desired results and to reassure participants that they can be part of the divine energies that move the world. James Frazer's The Golden Bough copiously describes a wide range of rituals as part of the evolution of religion out of magic (contagious and homeopathic), the predecessors of myth and religion. Examples of rituals would include rites of passage (initiation, circumcision, baptism, marriage), fertility rites, burial rites, scapegoating, etc.

Only initiated members are privy to the ritual; learning the ritual is usually a part of the initiation ceremony. Ritual is sacred and unique to each inter/national organization and is the common bond between all members of an sorority or fraternity, regardless of when or where they were initiated.
