An individual location in three-dimensional space within an archaeological site.
Provenience is the spatial (both level and depth) location of an artifact or feature at the site. The provenience of the artifact or feature is recorded by an archaeologist in the fieldbook and on the artifact bag. Provenience is important because it gives people a history on the object - where it was on the site.
The three-dimensional location of an artifact or feature within an archaeological site, measured by two horizontal dimensions, and a vertical elevation.
