In mysticism, mythology and alchemy, an elemental is a creature (usually a spirit) that is attuned with, or composed of, one of the classical elements: air, earth, fire and water.The elements balance each other out through opposites: water quenches fire, fire boils water, earth contains air, air erodes earth. The concept of elementals seems to have been conceived by Paracelsus in the 16th century. Paracelsus' elementals were: Antroposophy is also known to have knowledge of elementals.

Regarded as amongst the most bizarre and rarest forms of ghosts, elementals are alleged to be spirits which never held an earthly form or experienced life, as understood by human beings, in any manner. These supernatural beings have been reported since the very early times of recorded history; consequently, a great deal of folklore and fairy tales have sprung up around this form of spirit. Elementals are reported to take on the form of strange, glowing lights, sometimes roughly human-shaped, which tend to appear in areas where great tragedies have occurred. They have also been reported in the likeness of peculiar birds and animals. Tradition holds that elementals tend to favor remote areas, such as marshlands and remote deserts, but have also been known to haunt castles and other structures which have withstood profound bloodshed and suffering.
