The spirit type is believed to be comprised of young women who have died by drowning, usually having committed suicide as the result of a broken love affair. Although the undine is regarded as a tragic figure, traditions hold that this spirit means no harm to the living, although heartless or unfaithful lovers may become haunted and tormented by these ghosts.
