Definitions for "Crude protein"
A term used as an estimate of protein content of feedstuffs. Crude protein includes low value sources of protein.
An estimate of the total protein of a feed; crude protein includes true protein and other nitrogen containing substances such as ammonia, amino acids and nitrates. Crude protein acts as an energy source and a tissue builder. If the energy/protein ratio is too low, protein will be used to satisfy energy requirements first, the remaining will be used for growth.
Total protein in a feed. To calculate the protein percentage, a feed is first chemically analyzed for nitrogen content. Since proteins average about 16 percent (100 รถ 6.25) nitrogen, the percentage of nitrogen in the analysis is multiplied by 6.25 to give the CP percentage.
