Literally the term “sunnah†means “way.†However, it is now almost exclusively used in reference to the Prophet Muhammad (saws) — such as usage appears in capitalised form — and refers to his way or example in every regard.

That which prophet practiced or said
literally custom or practice, that which is estemed and ancient. The habit and practice of the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad, peace be upon him, including character, manners, ritual actions, and political and legislative actions. The Messenger's practice is the complete presence of the Qur'án; by following the sunnah & listening in our hearts for its inner meaning, we learn to read the signs of God in the horizons and in ourselves.
In its broadest sense, the entire Deen which the Prophet came with and taught, i.e. all matters of belief, rulings, manners and actions which were conveyed by the Companions. It also, includes those matters which the Prophet established by his sayings, actions and tacit approval - as opposed to bid'ah (innovation).
Literally, path, way, tradition. Technically, all that is narrated from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessing be upon him), his acts, his sayings, whatever he has tacitly approved, and all the reports which describe his physical attributes and character. Also, Sunnah describes a category in Islam where some acts of Ibadah (worship) become liked and not must. Sunnah is another source of legislation along with the Qur'an.

In the Quran the word is used in two expressions: Sunnat Allah: 17:77; Sunnat al-awwalin: (8:38) In the Hadith the term refers to the sayings and acts of the Prophet [pbuh]. It is also used for the beliefs and practices of the Muslim community in general. Such as, Ahl al-Sunnat wa ‘l-jama‘ah.
The actual practice of the Prophet (s.a.w.)
pl. sunan. literally the path, way or a form, the customary practice of a person or a group of people. It has come to refer almost exclusively to the legal way or ways, orders, acts of worship and statements etc., of Prophet Muhammad (saw) which have become models to be followed by the Muslims.
In general, the word Sunnah means habit, practice, customary procedure, or action, norm and usage sanctioned by tradition. In specific, any time the word Sunnah is mentioned, it is to refer to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.). Here it means his sayings, practices, living habits. The Hadith are reports on the Sunnah.

another source of Islamic law, which is a collection of the sayings of Muhammad, examples of his behaviour, things he approved of and things he condemned during his lifetime. The Sunnah is not a direct revelation by Allah as is the Qur'an, but as Muhammad was divinely inspired by Allah, his words and examples have the weight of divine authority. It also contains the Hadith, which is a collection of anecdotes collected together from his friends and family. Together the Hadith, Sunna and Qur'an form the basis of all shari'ah (Islamic law).

Sunnah literally means “trodden pathâ€, and therefore, the sunnah of the prophet means “the way of the prophetâ€. Terminologically, the word ‘Sunnah’ in Sunni Islam means those religious actions that were instituted by Muhammad during the 23 years of his ministry and which Muslims initially received through consensus of companions of Muhammad (Sahaba), and further through generation-to-generation transmission.
