Any one of a number of specific RNA molecules that form part of the structure of a ribosome and participate in the synthesis of proteins. Often distinguished by their sedimentation coefficient, such as 28S rRNA or 5S rRNA.
An integral structural component of the large and small ribosomal subunits. The rRNA associated with the large subunit has been shown to be a ribozyme with peptidyl transferase activity.
RNA in globular form, a major component of ribosomes. Its role is protein synthesis.
ribosomes are the small, but incredibly complex nucleoprotein complexes responsible for protein synthesis. They bind to mRNA molecules from the nucleus and physically move along the molecule, "reading" the code on the mRNA and attaching amino acids to the growing peptide (protein) chain. In eukaryotes there are three, quite distinctive RNA species bound up in the ribosome. These are known by their "Svedberg" numbers, a possibly obsolete measure of relative movement in centrifugation through a density gradient. The three species in prokaryotes are the 5S, 16S and 23S RNAs, vide infra.
(Abbreviation: rRNA) The RNA molecules that are essential structural and functional components of ribosomes, where protein synthesis occurs. Different classes of rRNA molecule are identified by their sedimentation (S) values. E. coli ribosomes contain one 16S rRNA molecule (1541 nucleotides long) in one (small) ribosomal sub-unit, and a 23S rRNA (2904 nucleotides) and a 5S rRNA (120 nucleotides) in the other (large) sub-unit. These three rRNA molecules are synthesized as part of a large precursor molecule which also contains the sequences of a number of tRNAs. Special processing enzymes cleave this large precursor to generate the functional molecules. Constitutes about 80% of total cellular RNA.
( rRNA) The RNA molecules that constitute the structural components of a ribosome.
a major component of the ribosome
RNA molecules which make up the ribosome.
RI-bo-SOAM-el RNA(rRNA) RNA that, along with proteins, forms a ribosome. 329
A class of RNA molecules that re present in ribosome.
RNA molecules of discrete sizes that, along with ribosomal proteins, comprise ribosomes of prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
One of the three types of RNA; rRNA is a structural component in ribosomes.
Several species of RNA that are incorporated into the ribosome. Involved in peptide bond formation.
Types of RNA found in the ribosome; some participate actively in the process of protein synthesis.
forms the structure of ribosomes that coordinate the sequential joining of tRNA molecules to the series of mRNA codons.
(rRNA) A class of RNA found in the ribosomes of cells.
The RNA components of a ribosome. One of these components, the small sub unit ribosomal RNA (also known as 16S ribosomal RNA in prokaryotes or 18S ribosomal RNA in eukaryotes) has been widely used to determine the tree of life.
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is a type of RNA that is the central component of the ribosome, the protein manufacturing machinery of all living cells. The rRNA is synthesized in the nucleolus. These machines then self-assemble into two complex folded structures (the large and the small subunits) in the presence of 70 – 80 ribosomal proteins.
