the traditional mail storage format of UNIX, where an entire mailbox is in one file, and the messages in the file are separated by "From_" lines (lines that begin with the word "From" followed by a space). It is inferior to maildir in several ways, but it has the support of some old-fashioned UNIX mailreaders, which makes it still occasionally useful.

The file in your Unix home directory that contains messages you have read but not deleted or moved to folders.
A standard format for storing multiple e-mail messages in a text file. A single MBOX-format text file can contain many messages. The MBOX format is most commonly used on UNIX systems.
All messages in an mbox mailbox are concatenated and stored in a single file. The beginning of each message is indicated by a line whose first five characters are "From " (the so-called "From_ line" or "'From ' line") and a blank line is appended to the end of each message. For a while, the mbox format was popular because text processing tools can be readily used on the plain text files used to store the e-mail messages.
