A student whose native language is not English and whose English skills (as measured on a test known as the Language Assessment Battery-Revised or LAB-R) are limited. Students who score below the 41st percentile on the LAB-R must receive bilingual or English as a Second Language instruction.

A term used to describe students who are in the process of acquiring English language skills and knowledge. Some schools refer to these students using the term limited English proficient, or LEP.
