A network connection from one computer to another made through a permanent and high-speed method such as Ethernet or T-1 connections. Usually leased from a common carrier.

A direct connection links a PC to the Internet via a communication cable, such as an Ethernet line. Many PCs are connected to the Internet over a modem line. A modem connection is not considered a direct connection because a computer user must start an additional process, such as Trumpet Winsock or dial-up networking, before a browser can run.
