This term can simply mean any structure or process that occurs in the brain. It can also be used as a directional or relative term that indicates that, relative to the present point of reference, a structure or function occurs closer to the brain (usually in the phrase "... more central..."). In the auditory system this term generally implies a structure closer to the auditory cortex, or a function that occurs closer to the auditory cortex. Sometimes however, particularly when consideration is being given to phonetic or linguistic processing of speech, reference is made to structures or functions more central than the auditory cortex. Such structures (eg. Wernicke's Area) carry out more abstract (or central) perceptual or linguistic processing. Perceptual processes can be considered to occur in a sequence of progressively more "central" or abstract functions - sensation (eg. hearing) - perception (eg. phonetic feature extraction) - higher processing (eg. linguistic processing leading to the understanding of speech). This term is the antonym of peripheral.
