Definitions for "Afterload"
Resistance against which ventricle must eject its volume of blood during systole.
involves the physical forces the pump (left ventricle) has to develop to overcome the resistive forces of the vasculature in order to push a bolus of blood (SV) into it during every heart beat
the pressure against which the left lower chamber of the heart (ventricle) must eject the blood during a beat. The pressure is made by the amount of blood that is already flowing and the vessel walls themselves. About 90 percent of the oxygen needed by the heart is used in the afterload effort.
Refers to position of a muscle when the elastic tissue 'in series' is slack - less than resting length. During contraction, the slack has to be taken up. See also preload.
