Alphabetical or subject index cut into the fore-edge of a book (thumb cut) to facilitate quick reference. Dictionaries are sometimes thumb cut.
A method of facilitating the finding of major sections by printing a reference at the outer edge (usually of a RECTO) of the appropriate PAGE and then cutting progressively smaller arcs out of previous pages such that the page can be found by holding the reference page with the thumb and opening the book at that point. Often found in dictionaries to mark the starting pages of new letters.
