A competition in which the player's total strokes for the round are recorded and compared with the scores of other players in the field. Considered a more testing form than matchplay and therefore as a better indication of ability. This format may be used with handicap (the player's handicap is deducted from the total score, giving a "net" score) as illustrated below.
