Most of the time this is simply a cramp in the diaphragm. If you get a side stitch, slow down for 30 seconds or so. A couple helpful hints. If you get a stitch, try changing the way you carry your shoulders. Also, if it is in your left side, exhale forcibly each time your right foot hits the ground, and do the opposite if it is on your right side.
