Broadly, a confluence of two industries: skilled nursing and rental housing for the elderly. Today the senior housing industry can be divided into three categories, defined by the services offered: Independent/Congregate Living, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing.
Age-restricted housing for older adults who are able to care for themselves and live independently. Usually no additional services such as meals or transportation are provided.
(includes Assisted Listing, Congregate Care, Senior Apartments and Skilled Nursing Centers) multi–residential property specifically designed for care of senior citizens and/or physically disabled persons.
Senior housing is exclusively for those age 65 and older, which represents a growing sector of the U.S. population. Public subsidy programs are available for this type of development and help to provide new homes for low and moderate income seniors with fixed incomes.
Homes that are restricted to ownership by persons of 55 years or older.
Independent living units, generally apartments. Any supportive services, if needed, are through contract arrangement between tenant and service provider.
