Salm is a character is Persian epic Shahnameh. He is the oldest son of legendary hero and king Fereydun. It is believed that his name, driven from the Arabic word Salamat(health), was given to him by his father, after Salm chooses to seek safety and run instead of fighting the dragon that had attacked him and his brothers (the dragon was Fereydun himself who had disguised himself to test his sons).
Salm is the name of several historic principalities in present Germany, Belgium and France. The County of Salm arose in the 10th century in Vielsalm, in the Ardennes region of present Belgium. In 1165, it was divided into the Counties of Lower Salm (in the Ardennes) and Upper Salm (in the Vosges mountains, present France).
