The Yoga of Physical and Mental Control is considered the complete yoga because it focuses on controlling both the mind and body in order to attain enlightenment. The central practise of raja yoga is meditation and absolute mental control is the goal. Hatha yoga is the physical branch of the meditative science of raja yoga. While meditation teaches control of the mind, hatha teaches control of the body. Hatha uses asanas (postures), pranayama (control of breath), and relaxation to control the physical body and life force (prana). Within hatha yoga, there are many styles or types of physical yoga, such as ananda, ashtanga, bikram, integral, iyengar, kripalu, kundalini, sivananda, and viniyoga.

As a meditative process, it involves intense concentration and physical discipline as one proceeds through the levels of physical body, conscious thought, unconscious mind, finally to encounter the depth of Being itself.

Raja Yoga (lit. Royal Yoga) is the system of yoga outlined by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras. It is also sometimes referred to as Ashtanga (eight-limbed) yoga because there are eight aspects to the path to which one must attend.
