(sheaf of grain) the sheaf of barley offered in the Temple as a wave offering on the second day of Passover, the day that marks the beginning of seven weeks of counting; the fifty days counted from that day until Shavuot.
(OH-mer) n. Omer (measure of grain). A dry measure spoken of in Torah of the barley that was brought as an offering on the second day of Pesach -- Nisan 16 -- after which then the grain of the new harvest was permitted to be eaten. The 49 day period of counting from the time of this offering until the Festival of Shavuot, the 50th day, is called counting the Omer (these days are counted on an omer calendar).

Omer is an ancient unit of measure used in the era of the Temple in Jerusalem. It is used in the Bible as an ancient unit of volume for grains and dry commodities. (The omer was equal to 0.1 ephah; this is believed to equal approx. 43 oz. 4.032 liters, 246.05 cubic inches, 0.9154 U.S.dry gallon, or 0.8869 British imperial gallon).
