The introduction of a small tube into the kidney to drain urine to the abdominal surface, thus bypassing the ureter. Nephrostomy is sometimes performed after an operation (to remove calculus) on the ureter or kidney to allow healing to take place.
a surgical procedure by which a tube, stent, or catheter is inserted through the skin and into the kidney
A tube placed into the kidney through the skin that is used to drain the kidney.
Operation to relieve a waterlogged kidney. A nephrostomy tube is put in and connected to a drainage bag outside the body. A kidney may become waterlogged because the tube that drains the urine into the bladder has become blocked, by secondary cancer for example.
The insertion of a tube through the skin into the kidney, mainly to provide urine drainage where the ureter is not functional or to remove or dissolve kidney stones.
Surgery to make an opening from the outside of the body to the renal pelvis (part of the kidney that collects urine). This may be done to drain urine from a blocked kidney or blocked ureter into a bag outside the body. It may also be done to look at the kidney using an endoscope (thin, lighted tube attached to a camera), to place anticancer drugs directly into the kidney, or to remove kidney stones.
A surgical incision into a kidney.
A surgically created passage from the skin directly into the central collecting space of the kidney. Usually a tube is left in this passage to drain the urine into a bag carried outside the body. This same passage can be enlarged and used for percutaneous procedures on the kidney. Creation of an opening into the renal collecting system.
A nephrostomy is an artificial opening created between the kidney and the skin which allows for the drainage of urine directly from the upper part of the urinary system (renal pelvis). A nephrostomy is performed whenever a blockage keeps urine from passing from the kidneys, through the ureter and into the urinary bladder. Without another way for urine to drain, pressure would rise within the urinary system and the kidneys would be damaged.
