A standard that was developed to allow standard CD-ROM drives and other playback devices, including DVD-ROM drives, to read various CD formats, including CD-RW discs. A similar standard, termed Super MultiRead, is being developed to provide similar compatibility for the different forms of DVDs.
The ability of any drive to read all of the following types of media: CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW. MultiRead is a standard developed by the Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA).
CD-ROM and DVD-ROM devices that are able to read all of the disk formats, including: CD, CD-R and CD-RW.
An OSTA approved specification for CD-ROM and compact disc players enabling them to read discs generated by CD-RW drives.
A drive that can read CD-RW (CD Rewritable) media. (4/99)
As opposed to a reflectivity of 0.7 or greater for CDs and CD-Rs, the reflectivity of a CD-RW is around 0.2. Thus, CD-ROM or CD players, which are designed to anticipate a reflectivity of 0.7 or greater, cannot play back a CD-RW disc. However, by the addition of an AGC (Automatic Gain Control) circuit, the ratio of amplification can be switched to enable playback of CD-RWs. CD/DVD drives that are able to play back CD-RWs and packet-written discs are referred to has having "MultiRead" compatibility, and compatible equipment bears a logo to identify it as such.
A new optical storage hardware specification adopted by OSTA, which defines the requirements that must be met in order for a drive to play or read CD, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD discs.
A standard developed by the Yokohama group, a consortium of companies attempting to ensure that new CD and DVD hardware can read all CD formats.
An OSTA standard for CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. Drives which follow the MultiRead standard can read commercial CDs (audio and data), CD-R discs, and CD-RW discs. They can also read discs written in fixed- or variable-length packets. For more information, see the MultiRead Specification. Note! Drives which have the MultiRead logo issued by Hewlett-Packard have been tested for compliance with the MultiRead specification. Drives labeled as "multi-read" (without the logo) probably have not been tested for compliance with the specification, and may not be able to read CD-RW or packet-written discs.
A CD-ROM/DVD-ROM computer drive standard which allows the computer to read audio CDs, data CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
