A text file located in the Windows folder that contains NetBIOS names and their associated IP addresses. This file is used for name resolution for a NetBEUI network.
A text file used to locate remote computers for network file, printer, and remote access services. Used if WINS or DNS servers are not available on the network. It essentially maps NetBIOS names (commonly used for computer names) to IP addresses for hosts that are not located on the local subnet. In Windows XP, the file is stored in the systemroot\System32\Drivers\Etc folder.
