Definitions for "Light gun"
A hand-held directional light signalling device that emits a brilliant, narrow beam of white, green or red light, as selected by the tower controller. The light gun is used as an alternate means of communication for controlling traffic operating in the vicinity of the airport and on the airport movement area. Fr: projecteur directif
a plastic gun that plugs into your game console and allows you to kill enemies by shooting at the television screen
How does it know what you are aiming at? Since the games console is responsible for drawing the screen it always knows where the raster line is that draws the screen, it starts at the top left and draws the screen from left to right and top to bottom (it takes 1/60th a second to draw the screen). The light gun points at the screen and waits for the raster line to cross the path. As soon as the light gun detects the change from a dark, unrefreshed pixel on the screen to a light, newly refreshed pixel. The gun informs the console which in turn can then work out the coordinates of where the raster line would have been at that point. If there is a target at those coordinates then a hit is registered.
Standard-issue weapon used both good and bad guys in most action cartoons.  Instead of bullets, it fires brightly colored beams of light, usually red or blue.  Curiously, a single hit will blow apart almost any vehicle, but causes no more than a small burn mark on a person.
