A genius or demon; one of the fabled genii, good and evil spirits, supposed to be the children of fire, and to have the power of assuming various forms.

Another of the creation of Allah, besides humans and angels, made from smokeless fire (cf. [55:15]). Like humans, but unlike the angels, jinn have free will and can be believers or disbelievers. Shaytan is a jinni.
