The river considered sacred by Hindus.
A sacred river of the hindus which originates from the glacier Gangotri at a point called Gomukh in the Himalayas. One is said to be absolved of all sins by bathing in its holy waters.
The great sacred river flowing from the peaks of the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal and delivering from sin everyone who comes in contact with her. When she cascaded down from heaven by the endeavors of King Amshuman and his son and grandson, Lord Siva detained her waters on his head to cushion the earth from the force of her descent.
Flowing from its source in the Himalayas down through the plains to the Bay of Bengal, the river Ganga is considered to be the most sacred river in India, and all the land through which the river flows is considered holy.

A major Indian River. Originating in the Himalayan glaciers, it is held extremely sacred. The legend says that it is a heavenly downpour routed through the locks of Shiva. Water from this river is carried to all parts of the country for religious rituals, including those of birth and death. It is also customary to cremate the dead on the banks of the river Ganga or immerse the bodies in the river itself.
