Definitions for "Digital Zoom"
A zoom that in effect crops a picture rather than moving the lens closer to the object of the picture using a physical mechanism. Cameras with digital zoom are usually less expensive than cameras with optical zoom.
A method of making a subject appear closer by cropping away the edges of the scene. Digital zoom reduces the overall file size. Some cameras then increase file size by estimating where to add similar pixels to bring file size back up to full resolution.
Simulates the effect of an optical zoom lens by enlarging a part of a digital image and cropping out the extra information. The result is a picture with bigger pixels and therefore poorer image quality.
