the replacement of cations associated with the clay surface by those of another species, e.g., the conversion of sodium clay to calcium clay.
( Ped.). the process whereby a soil absorbs certain positively charged ions from the soil solution and gives up other cations in equivalent quantities and in which the colloidal fraction of the soil is primarily concerned. The term "Cation Exchange" is tending to be substituted ( BCFT modif.).
