(age related macular degeneration) a condition which effects central vision but does not generally effect the peripheral vision; rehabilitation is very effective with persons who are adaptable and willing to adjust. Using low vision aids and or a CCTV may help significantly. Also referred to as magnifier.
(A)ge (R)elated (M)acular (D)egeneration - Macular degeneration is a disorder that affects the macula (the central part of the retina of the eye)causing decreased visual acuity and possible loss of central vision.
Age Related Macular Degeneration. the breaking down of the macula, the back portion of the retina that is responsible for clear vision. There are two main types of ARMD. (1) Involutional ARMD (Dry ARMD) results in a slow, progressive loss of central vision (usually not beyond 20/200). There is currently no treatment. (2) Exudative (Wet ARMD) results in distorted or blurred vision caused by the growth of neovascular membrane in or near the macula. May be treated if diagnosed early without significant loss of central vision. (Ref: WebMD)
