Any one of several species of long-billed limicoline birds belonging to the genera Scolopax and Philohela. They are mostly nocturnal in their habits, and are highly esteemed as game birds.
A long billed, neckless "shorebird" ( Scolopax minor) of the moist forest. Fond of earthworms and noted for its nocturnal display flights in spring. Otherwise secretive and rarely seen. Padjâ shkaaaji or padashkaanji in the Ojibwe.
