Definitions for "Woodblock"
This term, used interchangeably with woodcut but more often for Japanese ukiyo-e prints and the woodcuts of Provincetown or Arts and Crafts printmakers, also refers to the block of wood that forms the basis of this relief process. Soft wood is cut lengthwise along the grain, seasoned to prevent warping, and planed smooth. See woodcut and block print.
Relief printing technique, in which the image is transferred to paper from the inked, raised surfaces of the block, which has been carved to remove material from the non-printing surfaces. Woodblock also refers to the block (printing medium) itself and the print that is made via this process.
The incised wooden plank or shaped wood blocks that hold the ink from which a woodcut is printed.
