Definitions for "USS Franklin"
Keywords:  franklin, navy, benjamin, fifth, gun
Five United States Navy ships have been named USS Franklin, the first four after Benjamin Franklin, and the fifth, the aircraft carrier CV-13, perpetuating the name of the previous ships (it was not the usual practice at the time to name carriers after individuals).
The third USS Franklin of the United States Navy was a 74-gun ship of the line.
The fifth USS Franklin (CV-13) (also CVA-13, CVS-13, and AVT-8), nicknamed "Big Ben", was an Essex-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. Although the four other vessels honored founding father Benjamin Franklin, CV-13 followed the then current pattern of carrier naming and recalled the 1864 Civil War Battle of Franklin fought in Middle Tennessee. CV-13 was notable as the hardest-hit carrier to survive World War II.
