Having, or being of, no use; unserviceable; producing no good end; answering no valuable purpose; not advancing the end proposed; unprofitable; ineffectual; as, a useless garment; useless pity.
"There is something tragic," writes Wilde, "about the enormous number of young men...who start life with perfect profiles, and end by adopting some useful profession." Note also Lin Yutang's maxim that "a perfectly useless afternoon spent in a perfectly useless manner" is what makes life worth living. Useless actions are, in some theories, the best way to resist the hegemony of a project-oriented society. See: ANABHOGYA-CARYA, DETACHED, FIDDLE AROUND, IDLENESS, OTIOSE.
