"There is something tragic," writes Wilde, "about the enormous number of young men...who start life with perfect profiles, and end by adopting some useful profession." Note also Lin Yutang's maxim that "a perfectly useless afternoon spent in a perfectly useless manner" is what makes life worth living. Useless actions are, in some theories, the best way to resist the hegemony of a project-oriented society. See: ANABHOGYA-CARYA, DETACHED, FIDDLE AROUND, IDLENESS, OTIOSE.
"Useless" is Depeche Mode's thirty-fourth UK single, released on October 20, 1997, and the fourth and final single for the album Ultra. It was released with "Home" as a double A-side in the US due to "Useless" getting airplay on US radio stations before "Home" was even announced, so both were released at once.
Useless is the debut release by the disbanded nu metal music group Unloco. The EP was released on April 25, 2000 via Captiva Records. All the songs from this release appeared on the band's major label debut Healing (albeit re-mastered), with the song "I" changed to the title "Nothing".
