nets with a wide mouth tapering to a small, pointed end, usually called the "cod end." Trawls are towed behind a vessel at any depth in the water column.
Type of fishing gear used by offshore (banks fishery) and inshore fishermen. Trawls employ the baited hook. A series of long strong lines (each one approximately 300 feet) with short three-foot "sud" lines, evenly spaced at six foot intervals, were set on the fishing grounds and moored with weights and floats just above the sea floor. Each sud had a baited hook at its end.
