Suburban Utility Vehicle. Large, gas-guzzling, jeep-type vehicle. Mostly driven in a belligerent, erratic manner by people who believe the larger vehicle always has the right of way and that four-wheel drive makes you invincible.
SUVs, sport-utility vehicles, are used for a variety of purposes, including leisure activities. Off-road models were particularly popular when this type of vehicle became a fad in the 1990s. However, SUVs are increasingly used more or less like regular passenger cars. They are taller than sedans, allowing the drivers to see over a longer distance. Though most of them hold fewer people than minivans, which have three rows of seats, the large cargo space has added to the recent popularity of SUVs.
Sports Utility Vehicle. Absurdly large jeep-like vehicles that are becoming standard issue with (upper-) middle class American families, while their elected representatives keep insisting that the third world reduce greeenhouse emissions.
Saybolt Universal Viscosity. The time in seconds required for 60 cubic centimeters of a fluid to flow through the orifice of the Standard Saybolt Universal Viscometer at a given temperature under specified conditions. (ASTM Designation D 88.)
