Sun Microsystems' name for their variant of the Unix operating system. Has risen since its appearance in the early '80s to become the world's most popular commercial flavour of Unix. Recent releases go by the name Solaris, so SunOS has come to refer to older versions (4.x and below). see also: Solaris
