refers to arid lands having vegetation that is adapted to dry conditions, and having extreme temperature variations between the hot of the summer season and the cold of the winter season. In Idaho it often has considerable sagebrush.
Arid land with xerophilous vegetation found in regions of extreme temperature range and loess soil.
Vast treeless plains, sometimes called shortgrass prairie. Generally steppe areas are arid with extreme range in temperature. Among the most famous steppes are the great plains in southeast Russia and southwest Asia.
extensive plain without trees (associated with eastern Russia and Siberia)
A vegetation zone characterized by grasses, shrubs and few trees.

Open grassy plains in the temperate zone, characterized by low and sporadic rainfall and a wide annual temperature variation.
An area of grass-covered and generally tree-less plains, with a semi-arid climate. It is similar but not identical to a prairie.
semi-arid ecosystems characterized by low density of vegetation, normally grasses and shrub communities
An area of grass-covered and generally treeless plains, with a semiarid climate, which forms a broad belt over southeastern Europe and the southwestern part of the former Soviet Union.
In physical geography, a steppe ( - , - , - ), pronounced in English as , is a plain without trees (apart from those near rivers and lakes); it is similar to a prairie, although a prairie is generally considered as being dominated by tall grasses, while short grasses are said to be the norm in the steppe. It may be semi-desert, or covered with grass or shrubs or both, depending on the season and latitude. The term is also used to denote the climate encountered in regions too dry to support a forest, but not dry enough to be a desert.
